Vince Staples, 23 says he has never done drugs or drank alchohol in his life, the rapper tweeted out last April.

 Staples before tweeting that out in a CNN interview said, “I’ve never drunk alcohol, smoked a bit of anything, took any drugs that my doctor didn’t give me for asthma in my life,” Staples says to CNN. “I’ve never fell victim to peer pressure in my life, in general, and there’s enough respect for me as a person amongst my peers … once they figure out that’s something that I don’t do they don’t even try to push it to me.”

A member of the group Cutthroat Boyz, rapper Vince Staples surfaced in the early 2010s with a spate of promising appearances on Odd Future-related recordings -- including Earl Sweatshirt's "epaR," Mike G's "Moracular World" and Award Tour EP, the Jet Age of Tomorrow's "Lunchbox," and Domo Genesis' "Elimination Chamber" -- as well as the 2011 mixtape Shyne Goldchain. In 2012, the rapper released Winter in Prague, a mixtape issued as a free download with the production work handled entirely by Michael Uzowuru. A darker, more introspective mixtape, Stolen Youth, arrived in 2013 with a co-billing to Larry Fisherman (a Mac Miller alias) and verses from Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Mac Miller (as Mac Miller), and Cutthroat Boyz partner Joey Fatts. Staples then performed as the opening act on Miller's Space Migration tour. Among Staples' assists in 2013 were verses on Earl Sweatshirt's Doris and Jhené Aiko's "The Vapors." The rapper continued his steady ascent in 2014 with a fourth mixtape, Shyne Goldchain, Vol. 2, and contributions to Common's Nobody's Smiling -- specifically on the key single "Kingdom," as well as on the deluxe edition bonus track "Out on Bond." His debut album, Summertime '06, landed in 2015 with production from Clams Casino and No ID. It rose to number three on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and was selected as one of the top albums of 2015 on many notable year-end lists. The following summer, Staples released Prima Donna, a seven-track EP that featured A$AP Rocky and Kilo Kish. Again breaking into the Top Ten on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, the EP featured production by James Blake and an accompanying short film.

Rebirth Brass Band
@Granada Theater

Friday, April 14th, 2017 9:00 PM

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

The Wild Reeds
@Club Dada

Friday, April 21st, 2017 8:00 PM

Great singers aren't easy to come by, so finding three in one band is something special. The Wild Reeds' music shines when Sharon Silva, Kinsey Lee and Mackenzie Howe harmonize, but each also takes a leading role — and that's the power of the L.A. band, whose songs are clear and memorable, potent and sometimes delicate.

Lil Wayne
@South Side Ballroom

Friday, April 28th, 2017 8:00 PM

This New Orleans, La. born rapper has been rap rhyming us for years, but if you're under 30 and perhaps not African-American his artistry maybe a little dull for you. Did you know Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. (Lil Wayne) attended one of New Orleans most prestigious magnet schools and his teachers considered him quiet talented, not just a performer.  But, the hood was him; whatever that means and like Mr. Willie Nelson Weezy enjoys the maryjane. Catch Weezy weekend.

In 1991, at the age of nine, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label, and half of the duo The B.G.'z, alongside fellow New Orleans-based rapper Lil' Doogie. In 1996, Lil Wayne joined the southern hip hop group Hot Boys, with his Cash Money label-mates Juvenile, Young Turk and Lil' Doogie. Hot Boys debuted with Get It How U Live!, that same year. Most of the group's success came with their platinum-selling album Guerrilla Warfare and the 1999 single "Bling Bling". Along with being the flagship artist of Cash Money Records, Lil Wayne is also the Chief Executive Officer of his own label imprint, Young Money Entertainment, which he founded in 2005.
